Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated as the birthday of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, famous as Gandhiji, who had ever known as 'Father of Nation' of India. Gandhiji was born on October 2, 1869. Hence Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated every year on their honour.

Gandhi Jayanti is kept National Holiday in India. This day is also celebrated in all over world as the International Day of Non-Violence.

On this day all schools and offices are closed throughout the India. Prayer meetings are held at Raj Ghat, New Delhi as well as many parts of country. Everyone pays their homage to Gandhiji. In some schools and colleges painting and essay competitions are organized.

Favorite devotional song 'Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram' and 'Ram Dhun' are sung in the memory of Gandhiji.
